A relaxing and well planned ground floor layout

Our clients are spread over a large geography and this fabulous family home belongs to a lovely client of ours who lives in Hertfordshire. They contacted us as they had a large extension added and as a result they did not know how to use this space and the other spaces that were now available on the ground floor.

In the open plan area, the space was dominated by a very large and stunning island.   There was also a structural floor to ceiling post which was  an important factor when designing the zones with this space.  Given our client wanted to use this space to relax as well as have informal and formal eating spaces, we created three zones - seating area, focused around their TV, formal dining was created around a stunning metal / marble dining table.  We also added bar stools to allow for informal dining and family time around the island.  Given the space available for the seating area, standard rugs were either too large or too small.  We therefore had a bespoke rug made for the client which sits perfectly under the corner sofa.

The next space we talked was the middle room.  This is to be used by the older members of the family when they want to chill out in their own space.  The priority here was comfort and style.  We embraced their artwork and came up with a colour scheme around that.  The special point in this room is the rotating coffee table with hidden storage so grandma can hide her treats!

We then moved onto the remaining living space which is to be used by the client's son who is in his early twenties.  The brief in here was to create a masculine space with lots of seating.  We added a corner sofa and separate accent chair to accommodate the client's son's friends.  We added plenty of areas to put things down with coffee tables and a TV unit.

The old garage had been converted into a store, utility and cloakroom.  The store had the electrical hub and mains plumbing so our client wanted to give this room organisation.  We designed and sourced a bespoke storage unit with pull out drawers so our client could sit on it and use the storage to hide all their footwear.  We painted this furniture in the same delightful deep navy as used in the kitchen.  All the electrical and plumbing have been hidden behind accessible panels.  To finish this room, we added coat hooks both at adult and children level so when the grandchildren pop over they have their own unique space!  In the utility, we sorted through our client's bits and pieces and then styled the room with artwork.  The cloakroom was an absolute delight to work on.  Given our female client is surrounded by men, we wanted to inject some of her personality in this room.  We did this by wallpapering the upper walls (above the navy panelling), in a tropical themed then styled the space.

The final challenge we had was coming up with a solution for the open plan understair area.  Our client did not want to have built ins, so given the restricted area, we had a bespoke half moon console table made, sprayed in the same colour as the kitchen units and had our stonemasons cut a stunning quartz top, which complements the kitchen worktop.

The end result are spaces which suit the family as a whole but also offer each family member to have their separate spaces too.

Our client is delighted with the results.
